How It Works

Enter any two numbers you want to compare, such as prices, scores, measurements, or data readings. Neither value needs to be the "starting" number because this formula treats both equally.

The tool finds the absolute gap between the two inputs, divides it by their average, and multiplies by 100. The result is always positive and identical regardless of which field holds which value.

This symmetric approach is ideal when there is no clear baseline. Comparing prices at two different stores, test results from two students, or measurements from two lab instruments are common use cases.

When to Use This vs. Percent Change

  • Percent Difference: no before/after relationship; you need a neutral, symmetric comparison
  • Percent Change: one value is clearly "old" and the other is "new," and you want directional insight

What Is the Formula?

Symmetric. Order independent. Always positive.

Complete Formula
% Diff = |V1 − V2| ÷ ( ( V1 + V2 ) ÷ 2 ) × 100

Divide the absolute difference by the average of the two values, then multiply by 100. The result is always positive and does not depend on the order of values.

Live Example
value 1
value 2
% Difference 10.40%
Absolute Diff 9

Step by Step Worked Example

Scenario: Student A scored 82 and Student B scored 91 on the same exam. How different are their results?

Step 1: Difference
|82 − 91|
= 9
Step 2: Average
(82 + 91) ÷ 2
= 86.5
Step 3: Percent
(9 ÷ 86.5) × 100
= 10.40%

The two scores differ by 10.40%. This result is the same whether you enter 82 first or 91 first, since the formula is symmetric.

Common Questions

How is percent difference different from percent change?
Percent difference uses the average of both values as the denominator, making it symmetric: swapping the two numbers gives the same result.
Can percent difference exceed 100%?
Yes: when one value is much larger than the other, the result can approach 200%. It cannot exceed 200% since the denominator is the average.
When should I use this instead of percent change?
Use percent difference when neither value is a clear 'before' or 'after,' such as comparing prices at two stores or measurements from two instruments.
Does the order of the two values matter?
No, the formula uses absolute difference divided by the average, so entering 50 and 80 gives the same result as 80 and 50.
How is this used in scientific research?
Researchers compare experimental results, instrument readings, and duplicate measurements to assess agreement or variability between two data points.
What does a 0% difference mean?
It means both values are identical: there is no gap between them at all.
Can I use this for negative numbers?
Yes, the formula works with negative values, though the interpretation changes. Comparing −10 and −20 yields a 66.67% difference.
What is the maximum possible percent difference?
The theoretical maximum is 200%, which occurs when one value is zero and the other is any positive number.
